Our Bachelor of Media Arts ‘Media Industry Placement’ with Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) is the perfect platform for students who want a career in the film industry. RSP is a world renowned visual effects studio, with major clients including film studios and independent producers from around the world. The Adelaide based studio has created thousands of visual effects for over 100 films. RSP was recently nominated for an Academy Award for their work on the film X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The ‘Media Industry Placement’ with RSP is a full time 18 unit course over a 10 week period, taught by RSP staff. The placement will provide final year students with hands-on training in core skills required by entry level visual effects artists. Students will gain practical insights into career strategies and employment prospects.
In the placement, students will gain exposure to professional production practices and work with industry standard software tools under the supervision of experienced visual effects artists. The course will comprise a series of lectures, workshops and presentations focusing on core visual effects skills in the software package Houdini, including fluid dynamics, particle simulations, hair and fur simulations, explosions, and fire effects. Students will learn while working in a simulated production environment within RSP's studio.
Students interested in the placement are required to submit a portfolio of relevant work and sit an interview. Assessment for entry is based on their portfolio, GPA and performance in the interview. The process is competitive and the places are limited.

New 2016 business programs
Two new integrated business programs will be available in 2016 and will provide students with a solid foundation in key business disciplines through industry engagement. The two new programs are as follows:
The students will learn how to navigate the business challenges such as operating across different socio-economic and institutional environments, working with state-owned enterprises and many and varied political systems. Students will have the opportunity to embed a student exchange experience, an internship or mentoring in the program.
This specialisation equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop strategic information systems and processes that align to an organisation’s business needs. Students will learn how to plan, form and apply IT solutions to respond to business problems and gain expertise in areas such as accounting, economics and marketing. An internship is also available in this program and students will graduate with the knowledge and confidence to succeed as a business professional in IT.
New Master of Engineering specialization for 2016
Starting in 2016, the Master of Engineering LMCL will offer three specializations:
QIBT to rename as Griffith College in December 2015
Navitas and Griffith University have successfully collaborated – through QIBT – since 1997, providing pathway courses for both domestic and international students. In that time more than 13,700 students have successfully completed their program at QIBT.
Griffith College will integrate more closely with the University to enable further growth of international and domestic enrollments across Griffith University campuses in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Griffith College will deliver all the benefits of Navitas’ well-established and successful pathway programs while enabling students to live the Griffith University experience. ACU International Student Scholarship Program (ISS) Applications for the ACU International Student Scholarship Program (ISS) are open from the 1st to the 30th of September 2015 offering the opportunity for students to receive a 50% scholarship towards tuition fees. The University offers the following scholarships:
Up to 20 commencing undergraduate or postgraduate students a 50% tuition fee waiver. The tuition fee waiver is for the minimum duration of the course and applies to coursework programs.
Two commencing research degree students will receive full tuition fee waivers.
To be eligible for the ISS, a prospective student must:
be an international student from a country other than Australia or New Zealand
hold an offer for a place in an undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD program at ACU
be willing to enroll at ACU as a full-time student upon accepting the scholarship. You must be enrolled full time to continue receiving the scholarship

The World Health Organization has released an update (h/t @lisaschnirring) on the first 4 cases of the Jordanian MERS cluster which we’ve been following for a week, and which now numbers 6 cases. As suspected, this cluster appears to have begun with an imported case, but has since spread within a healthcare facility and in one case, to a contact of one in that facility.
The index case was treated, and released after a week, from a hospital in Amman. He relapsed, and was admitted to another hospital five days later, where he tested positive for MERS two days post-admission, and died two days later.
During this symptomatic period of roughly two weeks prior to being properly diagnosed, there appear to have been ample opportunities for others to be exposed. Where he contracted the virus is unknown at this time.
Two of the other three cases are described as having been admitted to the same hospital as this index case, but there is no documentation of direct exposure to, or contact with, the first case One case (#4) is a contact of one of those hospitalized cases (#2).
Patterns of spread similar to those we’ve seen in other hospital outbreaks both in the Middle East and South Korea.
Between 26 and 28 August 2015, the National IHR Focal Point of Jordan notified WHO of 4 additional cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection, including 1 death. All these cases are associated with a MERS-CoV outbreak currently occurring in a hospital in Amman city.
Details of the cases
A 60-year-old male living in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia travelled to Amman city, Jordan on 28 July. He developed symptoms on 31 July and, on 10 August, was admitted to hospital. The patient, who had comorbidities, was treated symptomatically and discharged on 18 August. As symptoms relapsed, on 20 August, the patient was admitted to another hospital in Amman on 23 August. He tested positive for MERS-CoV on 25 August and passed away on 27 August. Investigation of history of exposure to known risk factors in the 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms is ongoing.
A 38-year-old male from Kuwait city, Kuwait travelled to Amman city, Jordan on 7 August. He developed symptoms on 12 August and, on 17 August, was admitted to the hospital where a laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV case was hospitalized (case no. 1 – see above). Since his arrival in Amman city, he frequently visited a family member at the same hospital. The patient, who has no comorbidities, has no history of exposure to other known risk factors in the 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms. He tested positive for MERS-CoV on 26 August. Currently, the patient is in critical condition in ICU. Investigation of possible epidemiological links with the index case or with shared health care workers is ongoing.
A 76-year-old male from Amman city developed symptoms. On 16 August, due to his chronic condition, the patient was admitted to the hospital where a laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV case was hospitalized (case no. 1 – see above). He was discharged on the same day. On 20 August, the patient was admitted to the same hospital for a medical procedure for his chronic condition and, on 24 August, was discharged. On 25 August, he developed symptoms and was admitted to the same hospital. The patient tested positive for MERS-CoV on 25 August. Currently, he is in critical condition in ICU. Investigation of possible epidemiological links with MERS-CoV cases admitted to his hospital or with shared health care workers is ongoing.
A 47-year-old female from Kuwait city, Kuwait travelled to Amman city, Jordan on 15 July. She was identified through the screening of contacts of a laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV case (case no. 2 – see above). The patient, who has no comorbidities, tested positive for MERS-CoV on 27 August. Currently, she is asymptomatic in home isolation. The patient visited her family members at the hospital where a laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV case was hospitalized (case no. 1 – see above). She has no history of exposure to other known risk factors in the 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms.
Contact tracing of household contacts and healthcare contacts is ongoing for these cases. The National IHR Focal Point of Jordan informed the National IHR Focal Point for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia about the index case to trace contacts in Saudi Arabia.
Globally, the WHO has been notified of 1,478 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including at least 516 related deaths.
It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu’minin, Abu Hafs ‘Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu ‘anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, say: “Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah) , so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated.” [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]
Abu Hamzah Anas bin Malik, radiyallahu ‘anhu, who was the servant of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, reported that the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, said: “None of you truly believes (in Allah and in His religion) until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]
